In a celebration of diverse African musical talent, Rolling Stone- an influential American magazine compiled its second-ever annual list of the top 40 Afropop songs from across the continent. Former Sauti Sol vocalist Bien-Aime Alusa Baraza secured the 20th spot with his solo track ‘Ma Cherie‘ for the second year in a row.

“To be featured twice on @rollingstone magazine on the top Afro pop songs of 2023 is wild. Dream come true for me and mine. This year has truly been full of blessings. Merry Christmas and Happy 2024.”
Bien wrote.

Rolling Stone praised Bien’s vocals, describing them as effortlessly sexy and offering a fresh perspective over the modern treatment of quintessential Lingala sounds.
The Rolling Stone criteria focused on songs authentically representing African sounds, considering Afropop as a genre defining scenes and communities on the continent and in its diaspora.
“We thought of Afropop as a catch-all for music by artists who primarily live on or work for the continent, making hits that define scenes and communities there and in its diaspora.”
Rolling Stone explained.
