Two people have been killed and several others injured after a fight broke out between supporters of two candidates in the Kasipul by-election.

The clash happened on Thursday afternoon at Opondo area in Central Kasipul Ward, Homa Bay County. It involved supporters of independent candidate Phillip Aroko and ODM’s Boyd Were.

Boyd Were (L) and Phillip Aroko (R).

Police say the violence started when Aroko and his team allegedly went to Were’s rally and fired shots in the air, causing panic. Were’s supporters then fought back, leading to the death of two young men, both said to be Aroko’s supporters.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrance Koilem confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing. “No one will be spared. We will arrest everyone involved,” he said.

Homa Bay Governor and ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga condemned the violence and called on police and the IEBC to act firmly against anyone encouraging political chaos.

The Kasipul by-election will be held on November 27, 2025, after the killing of former MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was shot dead in Nairobi earlier this year.

Police have increased patrols in the area to maintain peace as campaigns continue.
