PETITIONER SEEKS THE BAN OF TIKTOK ON KENYA

A petitioner has called on Members of Parliament to ban the use of the popular social media platform, Tiktok, citing that it is a contributor to the deterioration of cultural and religious morals in society.

The Executive Officer of Bridget Connect Consultancy, Bob Ndolo, in a petition to the National Assembly on Tuesday, called on MPs to move with speed. And ban the use of TikTok in the country as it is exposing young people to explicit sexual content.

Speaking in Parliament, Wetang’ula said his office received the petition from Bob Ndolo.

The petitioner has decried that the content that is being shared on the social media platform is inappropriate and is promoting violence, vulgar language, explicit sexual content, hate speech which is a serious threat to the cultural and religious values in Kenya,” the petition read. 

The petitioner also alleged that TikTok has collected data of its users including information about the device being used to access the platform, and the location of its users, including browsing history. 

“The platform has shared information about its users with the third party company without users’ consent,” the petitioner claimed. 

The petition will be considered by the Public Petitions Committee which will give its verdict after 60 days.
