Lawyer and activist Morara Kebaso was arrested on Monday after police raided his main office in Kahawa Sukari, Nairobi.
His lawyer reported that the police restricted access to the Nairobi Regional Headquarters, where Morara was taken. Lawyers, media personnel, and others were blocked from entering.
“They’ve been instructed from the top not to allow anyone access to Morara,” his lawyer told reporters, condemning the actions of the police and accusing them of disregarding the rule of law.
The reason for the arrest of Morara Kebaso, who takes after his grandfather’s activism foosteps, remains unclear.
However, witnesses on social media described the incident as an abduction, with reports that a Subaru Forester was involved in the raid. An online video shows the vehicle traveling along Thika Superhighway shortly after the arrest.
Kebaso had spent the previous weekend in Bomet and Kericho counties, where he held civic education rallies and exposed stalled government projects. Just an hour before his arrest, Kebaso posted a video on his social media platform denouncing the brutal abduction and torture of Mombasa-based blogger Bruce John. He urged the Inspector General of Police to investigate the Mombasa Governor and arrest him for his alleged involvement in the crime.
Kebaso’s last post gave an ultimatum: if no action was taken against the Governor, he was prepared to suspend all activities for nationwide demonstrations.
