MATIANG’I DECLARES MONDAY 11th OCTOBER A PUBLIC HOLIDAY

The Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i on Wednesday 6th Oct announced that Monday 11th Oct will be a public holiday.

This is because the public holiday- Utamaduni Day falls on Sunday, October 10th. But Matiang’I said that the holiday shall be observed on Monday according to the Public Holidays Act.

The holiday was previously known as Moi Day until 2003 when former President Mwai Kibaki abolished it.

In 2017, the High Court ruled that October 10th remained a holiday unless the Public Holidays Act was appealed.

Whereas this day is already conferred by law, this shall be the first time that Utamaduni Day is observed in Kenya and this press release serves to emphasize the need for all citizens to recognize and celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Kenya in a manner that promotes unity, national cohesion and economic progress in the Country, stated the CS in a public statement issued today.
