On Tuesday, a man was arraigned in court in Karatina town, Nyeri County. And was charged with the aggravated assault and murder of Sheila Lumumba.

A woman was also arrested but has not been charged. Sheila’s family claim she was allegedly found selling items that belonged to Sheila.

The main suspect was arraigned in court today over the murder of Sheila Lumumba. He and another alleged suspect – a woman found reportedly selling Sheila’s stuff – were both arraigned. Bail was denied and taken to remand until Aug 15 when the case is heard again.

The suspect in custody is said to be the same individual who was last seen with Sheila alive using CCTV footage retrieved during the investigation. It is alleged, on his arrest, that he was found wearing Sheila’s shoes. And had their house key, their suitcase, and their shirt. He said he wanted to sleep with Sheila but they said no.

Sheila’s parents noted that they would like to meet the people who killed their daughter. “I want to see the people who killed my daughter, I would appreciate to just see them, and make sure action is taken,” Sheila Lumumba’s father told the BBC. He added “I can now see that at least there will be justice for my child.”

Sheila, a 25-year-old non-binary lesbian, was found dead in their home days after a group of male attackers reportedly raped, bashed, and murdered them.

A post-mortem report showed Sheila had been raped, stabbed several times in the chest, face, neck and eyes, and hit on the head with a blunt object. One of their legs had been broken.
