MAASAI MARA ENTRANCE FEE HIKE DRIVES TOURISTS TO SERENGETI

Tourists are now choosing Tanzania’s Serengeti over Kenya’s Maasai Mara for the wildebeest migration season. The reason? A 186% increase in Maasai Mara’s entrance fee from $70 (Sh9,205) to $200 (Sh26,300). The charges which apply to per person per day take effect from July 1.

Despite this fee hike, many luxury lodges in the Maasai Mara, like Angama, Mahali Mzuri, Sarova Mara Camp, and Ol Seki Hemingways Mara, are fully booked. However, these bookings are slightly lower than in previous years. International tourists are still keen to witness the annual wildebeest migration, but the higher fees are pushing many to choose the Serengeti instead, where fees remain at $70.

Tour operators are adjusting their plans, diverting safaris to Tanzania. This shift is noticeable, with bed occupancy in Maasai Mara lodges currently at 70 percent, according to Mara Managers Association Chairman Harrison Nampaso. Fred Odek, Chairman of the Kenya Association of Tour Operators, mentions that while visitor numbers are still high, they are not as high as usual.

Recent heavy rains and ongoing political demonstrations in Kenya have also affected some camps, causing cancellations. The Great Wildebeest Migration, which runs from July to October, is a huge draw for tourists.

Why is Maasai Mara Reserve Popular?

Every year, over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles travel across the Serengeti-Mara for fresh grass and water. This journey includes dramatic river crossings and encounters with predators, making it a breathtaking spectacle and a major tourist attraction.

Joseph Kithitu, Managing Director of Hemingways Travel, reports many booking requests for safaris across Kenya and the region. However, political protests and economic issues are creating challenges this season.

The wildebeest migration is often considered one of the natural wonders of the world.
