Social media is flooded with the somber announcement of South African singer Zahara passing away. The 36-year-old breathed her last on December 11 at a private South African hospital. Zahara, born Bulelwa Mkutukana achieved global acclaim for her 2011 debut album’s double platinum hit track, ‘Loliwe,’ which delves into the theme of life after death. She is also popular for chart-topping hits “Phendula” and “Impilo.” .
“It is with heavy hearts and deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved daughter, sister, and friend, Zahara. Surrounded by family and loved ones, Zahara departed this world on Monday, 11 December 2023.”

Zahara Passes Away
According to a prior statement her family released on social media, Zahara was in hospital for a week due to physical pain. Coincidentally, the hospital stay came not long after celebrating her birthday on November 9. While unconfirmed, there are sources speculating liver complications as the cause.
The self-taught guitarist showcased her talent as a performer in various countries. In fact, just before she got ill, she was slated to perform at Luanda in Angola. Additionally, it’s noted that her fiancé, Mpho Xaba, recently completed the payment of the bride price.
Kambua Eulogizes
Gospel singer Kambua was among the many Kenyans mourning the death of Zahara. The mother of two praised the South Afrcan artist for her unique voice and healing music. Though the two never got to meet, Kambua expressed gratitude for Zahara’s gift. And acknowledges Zahara as a cherished treasure in Africa
“Another day to grieve the loss of a woman I loved but never met. @zaharasa . I’m so saddened by the news of her passing. I never quite heard a voice like hers. Her music has healed me in many ways. The train you sang about (Loliwe) finally came… rest well Zahara. Thank you for sharing your gift with us. You were loved, and such a treasure to Africa.”
