Former rapper Colonel Mustafa finally broke the silence after a video of him working at a construction site went viral.
In a video that was doing rounds online, the rapper was seen carrying blocks and handing them over to masons, as well as mixing sand and water.
The video elicited mixed reactions, with some Kenyans criticizing Mustafa for apparently going broke, despite having lived a lavish lifestyle in the past.
Speaking to Ankali Ray of Milele Fm, Mustafa dispelled rumors that his video was for attention-seeking.
He confirmed that the person in the video was indeed him. Even though he did not know how the video was taken.
Mustafa revealed that he has not had any music gigs for over a year. And that was why he had resorted to taking on the tough construction job, in order to sustain himself and avoid relying on others for support.
Cancer
“At the heart of my struggles, there’s a battle more profound than any rap rivalry – a war against cancer,” said Mustafa, whose mother has been blindsided by lymphoma. The insidious disease has not only ravaged her body, but laid siege to the family’s finances.
With coffers running dry, Mustafa was left no choice but to get odd jobs to keep the medical bills at bay. “My mother’s life is my true wealth. I’ve poured my fortune into her care, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.” he added.
Rubbishing rumors that the video was a desperate bid for attention, Mustafa affirmed, “This is no publicity stunt. I’m fighting for my mother’s life, and I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her going.”
