A female police officer yesterday shot herself dead at Limuru Administration Police Headquarters. The officer, Constable Edith Nyawira of the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit, took her life around midday by shooting herself. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Limuru Health Center.
The deceased cop, had absconded duty and used a scorpion rifle that had been issued to her. She was supposed to be on guard at a local bank.
Edith was said to have left behind two suicide notes addressed to her sister and boyfriend. The notes were not made public. But reports indicated that it could have been out of domestic violence issues. Authorities were also suspecting that she was depressed over her troubled love life.
Witnesses said she shot herself in the mouth and the bullet exited in the back of her head. The team that visited the scene said they recovered three spent cartridges.
Confirming the incident, County AP Commander Doreen Gitonga said investigations into the matter are ongoing.
This comes at a time when suicide cases have been on the rise among the police. The National Police Service Commission had recently announced that it had established a counselling unit to evaluate, design, and lead an outreach programme to deal with mental health challenges among the police.
