Comedian and philanthropist Eric Omondi is grappling with the devastating loss of his younger brother, Fred Omondi, who died in a tragic accident on the morning of Saturday, June 15.
Eric Omondi recounted the heart-wrenching moment he learned about his brother’s fate. Initially, the police called him to inform him that Fred was critically injured and receiving treatment at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital. Confident that his brother was alive, Eric planned to share Fred’s phone number to solicit contributions for his medical expenses.
“Nikienda hossy polisi waliniambia Fred aliumia vibaya. So nilikuwa najua nitafika hapo niweke number yake watu wamtumie pesa,” Eric recalled. (“When I went to the hospital, the police told me Fred was badly injured. I thought I would get there and share his number for people to contribute money.”)
Upon arriving at the hospital, Eric was confronted with devastating news. “Kufika kumbe wamenidanganya hawakutaka kuniambia amekufa. Vile nilifika hapo nikapata amekufa tena ikakuwa noma,” he revealed. (“When I arrived, I realized they had lied to me; they didn’t want to tell me he was dead. When I got there, I found out he was dead, and it was terrible.”)
Fred Omondi Accident Details
Fred Omondi was involved in a Saturday morning accident on Kangundo Road.
He was riding on a boda boda that collided with a public service vehicle (PSV) near the Caltex Petrol Station. According to police reports, the boda boda rider was on the wrong side of the road. Fred died instantly in the collision, while the rider survived with severe leg injuries and multiple fractures in both hands, later being admitted to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.
Fred Omondi’s Final Night
Fred was returning home after hosting an event at Captains Lounge and Grill along Mombasa Road when the accident occurred. He was headed home to prepare and head to Meru, where he was scheduled to host another event at BVB Lounge.
A deeply sorrowful Eric Omondi arrived at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital’s morgue to view his brother’s body, which was later transferred to the Chiromo morgue. “Tumempeleka place poa,” Eric said. (“We have taken him to a nice location.”)
