Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has opened up about his health struggles while eulogizing his close friend, Frank Ireri, who died after a long battle with cancer.

Frank Ireri, a respected banker and one of Uhuru’s longtime friends, died on October 26 at the age of 63 after a long fight with cancer. The two shared a deep friendship that went beyond politics and public life.

Uhuru Kenyatta was speaking at Ireri’s funeral on Friday, October 31, at Karura Community Chapel.

He said the two often encouraged each other through their health challenges.

He did not confirm what illness he is battling but hinted that they shared similar struggles and supported one another through it.

“I do not know whether I should say this, but these are the realities of life. For the better part of last year and this year, he was very encouraging about the challenges we were going through. Since he had more experience than us, he guided us on how to handle such issues,” Uhuru said.

He described Ireri as a close friend who offered comfort and advice.

“I will miss that counsel and appreciate how he held our hands and told us not to worry, that all this will come to pass,” he said.

Uhuru’s emotional tribute showed a rare vulnerable side of the former president. He said he would be at peace when his time comes.

“The reason Frank is lying here is because it is his time. Those who have those challenges, we will continue fighting with them, but equally, when it is God’s time, we shall join him and be thankful for the life we lived,” he said.

Uhuru said Ireri played a big role in developing housing finance and policy, even though his efforts were not widely recognized.

His remarks came after months of rumors about his health. Early this year, reports started circulating that the former president was unwell. He had made few public appearances and was seen with a bald head, which led to speculation that he was undergoing chemotherapy.

Some Kenyans also noticed he seemed short of breath while speaking in public.

People close to him dismissed the claims. Jubilee Party official Pauline Njoroge said the rumors were fictional and made in bad faith.

Recently, Uhuru has appeared stronger and more active in public.

He led his Jubilee Party during a National Delegates Conference and attended several public functions, including the wedding of Kalonzo Musyoka’s daughter. His speeches have been full of energy, and his health appears to have improved.
