Police in Nairobi are investigating the death of Joel Austin Macharia Maina, a 24-year-old man who was shot in the head at close range in Thome Estate, Kasarani.

The key suspect, Peter Langat Chumo, is reportedly related to a senior government official, raising public concern over potential interference in the case.

Fateful Shooting Incident in Thome

The shooting occurred on the morning of Thursday, June 19, inside a Land Rover Defender parked at a petrol station. According to police, the suspect fled the scene but was later arrested and taken into custody at Kasarani Police Station.

Kasarani Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer Alloyce Mboya said Chumo told investigators that an argument broke out between him and the victim while inside the vehicle.

Chumo claimed that during the struggle, Maina tried to grab his gun, which then discharged “accidentally.”

However, detectives say the physical evidence paints a different picture. The bullet entered through the left side of Maina’s head and exited through the right, indicating a close-range, deliberate shot.

“The nature of the entry and exit wounds suggests it was a close-range shooting,” Mboya stated.

The incident has triggered protests in the area, with residents demanding justice. Many expressed fear that the suspect’s political connections could derail the investigation or shield him from prosecution.

Joel’s mother, Caroline Naserian, is devastated.

“He was very calm. The last time he visited me, he brought me milk from his first salary,” she said tearfully.

Maina had been working at a local liquor store for just three weeks.

Investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, pressure continues to mount on authorities to ensure a transparent process, regardless of who the suspect is connected to.
