Popular Kenyan gospel singer Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, known as Betty Bayo, has died. She died on Monday, November 10, while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Her last Facebook post, made just a day before her death, read: “I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me.”
The news was confirmed by her ex-partner, Pastor Kanyari, with whom she had two children. In a social media post, Kanyari wrote: “R.I.P Mama Sky. The mother to my kids.”
A family representative told the media that Betty had been battling acute leukaemia. She had been unwell since the previous week and suffered from excessive bleeding.
Betty was initially admitted to AAR Hospital on Kiambu Road. On Friday, she was transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for further treatment due to overbleeding complications. Despite the doctors’ efforts, she passed away at 1:03 pm on Monday.
The family said plans are underway to move her body to Kenyatta University Referral Hospital. Further communication regarding funeral arrangements will follow.
Betty Bayo was widely loved for her gospel music, which inspired many Kenyans. Her passing leaves a huge void in the gospel music community.
