Kenyan singer Mary Maina, better known as Marya, has opened up about the scary moment she suffered a stroke a few months ago.

She said it happened so fast while she was at home with her children.

“It happened within the blink of an eye. I was holding my second-born, and he fell. When I got up to get him, I also fell.”

Even her nanny was confused and did not know whether to attend to Marya, or the crying child.

Now my son was crying, I was crying, my nanny got confused. I told her to call whoever she could, immediately. I felt numbness in my hand and leg. At the hospital, I could not fist my hand. They said I had an Ischemic Stroke,” Marya said.

Her body suddenly lost strength. Her hand and leg went numb. She could not clench her fist.

She was rushed to hospital. Doctors confirmed she had suffered an ischemic stroke, which happens when blood flow to the brain is blocked.

The stroke left her weak with her left side paralyzed, unable to walk, and unable to handle daily tasks.

Marya also had to cancel all her shows. This meant she lost her main source of income. At the same time, her medical bills kept piling up. She also had to take care of her two young children.

But Marya says getting sick helped her see who her real friends are.

After she suffered a stroke, most of her friends left her. Only a few stayed including Eric Omondi, and have been supporting her together with her family.
