President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered all boda boda riders to be registered afresh.
The president who was speaking during Tuesday’s International Women’s Day celebrations at the Kenya School of Government in Lower Kabete, stated that all boda boda operators would be registered afresh to ensure sanity in the sector.
“We are going to re-register you all again and we must make sure that we safeguard women. I have instructed the law enforcement officers to use the instruments within the law to punish these perpetrators,” stated President Kenyatta.
Uhuru also directed a crackdown on all rogue boda boda riders across the country.
“I did give instructions and I have ordered all boda boda operators starting here in Nairobi and moving across the country to be registered afresh,” he said.
Uhuru termed the incident as barbaric saying that there should never be a repeat of the same.
Being a boda guy is not a license for you to harass pedestrians. Its not a license for you to harass motorists on our roads. He said. And it is certainly not a license for you to strip the dignity of our women!
Uhuru said that there should never be a repeat of what we saw.
Online petition
The announcement came at the same time agitated Kenyans are signing an online petition to compel the government to impose tight laws on rogue boda boda riders.
The petition dubbed ‘Regulations on Bodaboda operations in Kenya‘ is pushing for the introduction of a number of stringent measures to curb acts of lawlessness in the sector that now threatens to spiral out of control.
