In a pivotal announcement, President William Ruto declared that all primary, secondary, and junior secondary schools will reopen for the second term on Monday, May 13, 2024.
The President made this announcement during a meeting with leaders from Laikipia and Kajiado counties at State House, Nairobi.
“Schools will reopen next week,” President Ruto emphasized during the meeting.
This decision stemmed from a report received from the Kenya Meteorological Department, indicating a reduction in rain intensity across various parts of the country.
This decision comes in the wake of President Ruto’s directive on May 3, 2024, instructing the Ministry of Education to postpone the reopening of schools until further notice.
“The Ministry of Education is directed to postpone the dates of reopening of all schools in the country for the second term until further notice,” President Ruto asserted.

Furthermore, President Ruto directed the reassignment of Constituency Development Funds (CDF) towards the reconstruction of damaged schools and property, in preparation for the rescheduled reopening.
“Members of Parliament are requested to reorganize the CDF allocations to prioritize the reconstruction of school infrastructure that has been damaged as a result of the floods ravaging the country,” he instructed.
Meanwhile, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu had previously postponed the reopening of all primary and secondary schools by one week, from April 29, 2024, due to ongoing heavy rains.
