Njumbi Boys High School is in turmoil after 15-year-old Form Two student Ian Gichagua Maingi went missing for nearly three weeks without the school or his family knowing his whereabouts.
Ian, a bright and disciplined student, had been performing well until 17th October, when his mother, Jennifer Muthoni, received a text from the school announcing that students would be released the next day for the long December holidays. She believed Ian would finally be coming home.
But he never arrived.

Earlier, on 15th September, Jennifer visited the school about Ian’s unpaid fees. She asked that he stay in class while she tried to pay, and the school agreed.
On 27th September, students with fee balances were sent home. Ian did not return, but his mother assumed he was safe because the school had allowed him to stay.
On 18th October, when Ian did not come home, Jennifer called the school. A teacher said Ian had gone home weeks ago due to fees. Later, the principal said he had not sent Ian home.
A classmate said Ian felt unwell on 28th September after church and wanted to leave. No notification was sent to his mother, and the school does not know how he left or where he went.
The family reported Ian missing to Nyakianga Police Station under OB Number 13/19/10/2025 at 1511 hours.
Anyone with information is asked to contact his father, David Maingi, at 0705-808358, his sister Beth at 0724-258870, or Nyakianga Police Station.
His sister said, “We are praying to God to keep him safe. All we want is to know where our son is. He is a bright boy with a promising future.”
The case has raised concern about the school’s communication and monitoring of students.
