New video footage has shed light on the final moments before ‘mama fua’ Zaituni Kavaya, 54, fell to her death from a highrise apartment in Kilimani.
A dispute started between Kavaya and her Sudanese employer in Kilimani over KSh 5,000 that was said to be missing. She had done laundry at the home earlier that day. Shortly thereafter, she was dead.
In the clip, a man in a white shirt is seen holding Kavaya on the fifth-floor balcony of the building. He lets go of her shortly after.
Kavaya then makes her way down to the fourth floor. Three women approach and appear to talk to her. She does not stay. Instead, she continues down to the third floor.
Here, she is seen speaking to a group of unidentified people. The situation appears to worsen.
Kavaya, dressed in a blue outfit with red and black blotches, struggles to find a place to hold on. The area is sealed with glass panels, leaving her with no grip. Moments later, she falls.
A postmortem released to her family confirmed that she died from blunt force trauma.
Her death has sparked outrage. On Wednesday, her family and the domestic workers’ union staged a protest. They marched from her home in Kibera to the Kilimani building where she died.
The group later met Kilimani Police Commander Patricia Yegon. “We have this case, and we are still investigating. Zaituni will get her justice,” she said.
Investigators are now under pressure to piece together what really happened before Kavaya’s tragic fall.
