NEW DEVELOPMENT IN BABY TRAVIS’ DEATH

The untimely death of two-year-old baby Travis who had a fork jembe lodged in his skull has taken a new turn. This was after Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) management called for an inquest into the death of the baby.

According to KNH chief executive officer, Evanson Kamuri, who appeared before Senate Health Committee on Tuesday, December 6, baby Travis could have been a victim of domestic fights between the father and mother.

The hospital argued that the gravity of the accident could not have been caused by other children, as claimed by the mother. “It is an issue that requires to be investigated by another body. When we informed the woman about the death of her son, she stated about how her baby had been killed by her husband,” KNH CEO Evanson Kamuri told Senate Health Committee.

Baby Travis’s mother, Judy Muthoni, had said that the fork ‘jembe’ had been aimed at her during a domestic brawl with her husband, the KNH management said.

Muthoni lied about baby Travis

People Daily reported that the hospital’s chief executive officer, Evanson Kamuri, told the lawmakers that when Muthoni learned about her son’s death, she broke down, lamenting that the fork jembe had been aimed at her. “When we broke the news of the death of the baby, the mother started to scream in distress, revealing how her husband had killed her baby. She was wailing, saying how the ‘jembe’ was aimed at her,” said Kamuri. According to him, the injury sustained by Baby Travis was so severe that a child could not have inflicted it.

It was a severe injury that could not have been inflicted by other children while playing. That woman needs to come out clear on what exactly happened. We are very sorry for what happened but we have also been asking ourselves what happened,” he told the committee.

Also, Kamuri said the woman was not sincere about the time the injury occurred. “When we took the baby to the theatre, we realised that the jembe had been lodged in the head for much longer than what the woman said. We could tell this from the amount of pus that had accumulated at the wound,” he said.

More lies

The CEO further accused Muthoni of lying about being asked to pay  Sh20,000 before the baby could be attended to.

He said Muthoni was only told how much she would need to have, as it is usually the case when someone is processing admission.

“We do not ask for money especially for emergency cases because we look at their survival. Most of my clients do not pay, and won’t pay even after treatment. There is some Sh7 billion which has not been paid to the hospital as of now,” Kamuri said.
