Detectives have revealed new information about a white Toyota Probox that was seen shortly before the death of former Cabinet minister Hon. Cyrus Jirongo.

The vehicle, registration number KDJ 564E, was captured on CCTV at Eagol Petrol Station in Karai on the night of the accident. The footage showed the Probox entering the station shortly after Hon. Jirongo arrived and leaving around the same time. This raised concerns that he may have been followed.

To clarify the matter, detectives travelled to Keringet in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, where they traced the people linked to the vehicle. Statements were recorded from those involved.

Investigators established that the Probox is registered to Hon. William Mutai, the MCA for Keringet Ward and Majority Leader of the Nakuru County Assembly. The vehicle is managed by his wife.

According to the statements, on December 11, 2025, the MCA’s wife hired out the vehicle to Denis Kipyegon Koech. Koech said he needed the car to travel with his family to JKIA to receive their son, who was returning from New Mexico University in the United States.

The family left Keringet on December 12, 2025, arriving at JKIA at around 5:00 p.m. They waited for their son, whose flight landed at about 10:00 p.m. After clearance procedures, they began their return journey shortly after midnight.

While driving back to Keringet, they reached Karai, where visibility was poor due to weather conditions. They stopped at Eagol Petrol Station to refill their wiper fluid.

While at the station, they noticed Hon. Jirongo exiting the premises and driving off in the direction of Nairobi. Moments later, they heard a loud bang. They then saw a bus dragging Jirongo’s vehicle along the road.

After refilling the wiper fluid, they left the petrol station. They briefly stopped near the crash scene after a security guard asked for assistance. They did not step out of their vehicle but used their headlights to light up the area, as it was dark and no other vehicles had arrived.

They left the scene shortly after other motorists arrived and traffic began to build up. The family continued with their journey and arrived home at around 6:00 a.m. It was later that morning that they learned the accident victim was Hon. Cyrus Jirongo.

The DCI says it is still verifying the claims made by those linked to the Probox. The agency has assured the public that investigations.
