Mask seller Boniface Kariuki, who was shot by police during protests, has undergone a second emergency surgery to remove bullet fragments that remained in his head.
According to his family, Boniface was doing fairly well in the morning of June 20.
But by around 10 a.m., his condition suddenly worsened. Doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) made the decision to operate again.
“They saw his condition begin to deteriorate, so they decided to do the second operation,” said Eunice Kiragu, a relative.
The surgery lasted four hours. Boniface is now in critical condition and remains on life support at the KNH Intensive Care Unit.
Boniface Kariuki: More Damahe Discovered after Police Shooting

Doctors reportedly discovered more damage than expected. While swelling of the brain had been anticipated, surgeons found other complications during the operation.
“His condition is not good,” Eunice added. “They had expected a swollen brain, but when they went in, they found other issues.”
Despite the difficult news, the family is holding onto hope. They are calling on the government to act swiftly and ensure justice is served.
“We want justice,” said Rosemary Njeri, another relative.
“We’ve lived with this boy; he has never insulted anyone, never stolen from anyone. That’s why this has hurt us so much.”
Boniface was shot during the June 17 demonstrations. The officers accused of shooting him are Klinzy Masinde Barasa and Duncan Kiprono. They are currently being held at Capitol Hill Police Station. They were presented in court, where prosecutors secured more time to complete investigations.
Boniface’s family is pleading with the government to take responsibility and ensure the officers involved are held accountable.
