A quiet day in Kanyonyoo, Kitui County, turned tragic when a police officer opened fire, killing his clande, who is a married woman, and her friend.

The victim, Joy Mutisya, had told her family she was going to Kitengela to look for work.

Joy was a mother of two, one in Form Three and another in Grade Six. On the day of the shooting, she was at the home of her friend Jane Ndanu when the officer arrived.

Witnesses say a heated argument broke out. Jane tried to calm the situation, but the officer turned his AK-47 on both women, killing them instantly.

“He wanted to shoot Joy, and when Jane tried to stop him, he killed them both instantly,” a witness said.

Joy’s father-in-law, Jonathan Waema, said, “She was shot so many times we can’t understand… what kind of training do police get if they can do this to unarmed women?”

The officer fled, abandoning his rifle in a nearby bush. Police have launched a manhunt, but he remains at large.

The murders have sparked outrage in the community, with relatives questioning how a trained officer could commit such an act. As the families prepare for burial, they are left with grief, unanswered questions, and a deep sense of betrayal.
