Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has confirmed receiving KSh 300 from Meru residents after his phone number was leaked.
Ledama told the Senate that the money, sent in KSh 1 increments, was intended as “greetings” from people following the leak of allegations related to bribery in Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s third impeachment attempt.

Recent reports indicate that a confidential meeting occurred at Oakwood Hotel in Nairobi, where two senators met with County Executive Committee Members, the County Secretary, and the Chief of Staff. The purpose of the meeting was reportedly to lobby the senators to support Mwangaza and protect her position in the Senate.
Tensions was reportedly high during the meeting due to frustrations that Mwangaza failed to fulfil the promises she made during the previous impeachment attempt.
Ledama Ole Kina Speaks
Senator Ledama emphasized that the Senate’s role is to act as a jury in the impeachment process. And not to handle or be influenced by such contributions.
“The Senate only sits as a jury during the impeachment hearings. We do not control or manage the charges directly.” He said.
What is Kawira Mwangaza Accused of?

The Senate will hold a plenary hearing on August 19 and 20, 2024, where Mwangaza will defend herself against allegations of mishandling public funds.
She is also accused of unlawfully dismissing several officials from their positions. According to the Meru County Assembly’s letter, Mwangaza allegedly fired:
- Dr. Ntoiti – CEO of the County Revenue Board.
- Paul Mwaki – CEO of the Liquor Board.
- Kenneth Kimathi Mbae – Managing Director of Meru Microfinance Corporation.
- Joseph Kithure Mberia – CEO of the Meru Water and Sanitation Services (MEWASS).
These dismissals were reportedly made in violation of the provisions of the Meru County Revenue Board Act and the Meru County Investment and Development Corporation Act.
