A video of former IEBC)chair Wafula Chebukati has resurfaced, revealing how slain lawyer Kyalo Mbobu and two other high-profile figures visited him at 3 a.m. during the tense 2022 presidential elections.

The clip, recorded during an IEBC Tribunal Hearing in January 2023, has taken on a new significance after Kyalo Mbobu was gunned down on September 9 in Nairobi.

Chebukati said that on August 15, 2022, just hours before the results were announced, he was woken up in the IEBC holding room and told that three guests had arrived uninvited.

The visitors were former Jubilee secretary general Raphael Tuju, former Attorney General Amos Wako, and advocate Kyalo Mbobu. They said they wanted to discuss the tallying process and ongoing election operations.

“They just walked in uninvited. I was sleeping on my chair,” Chebukati recalled.

Chebukati explained that he refused to meet them alone. Instead, he called in all the commissioners, stressing that electoral decisions were not his personal responsibility.

“I didn’t want to meet them alone because it was 3 a.m., they were three men, and they wanted to discuss elections,” he told the tribunal.

The video has resurfaced just days after Mbobu was shot dead on September 9, 2025. He was attacked along Magadi Road near Galleria Mall while driving home. Police say gunmen on a motorcycle shattered his windshield before firing at least three bullets into him, killing him instantly.

The attackers sped off, and police are yet to identify them or establish the motive.
