WHY KNH MURDER SUSPECT WAS IN HOSPITAL DESPITE JANUARY DISCHARGE

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has explained why Kennedy Kalombotole, the man suspected of killing two patients, was still at the hospital even after being officially discharged in January 2025.

According to KNH CEO Dr. William Sigilai, Kennedy Kalombotole was discharged in January. But he remained at the hospital due to lack of identity, no place to go, and ongoing police investigations linking him to a previous patient’s death.

KNH murder suspect Kennedy Kalombotole.

Kennedy Kalombotole was first admitted to KNH’s Intensive Care Unit in November 2022. After recovering, he was moved to a general ward.

The hospital tried to identify him by checking his fingerprints and putting out public appeals on social media, but no one came forward.

In June 2024, they managed to find a home that agreed to take him.

However, when Kalombotole was readmitted in December 2024, that home refused to take him back for reasons that were never explained.

Even though doctors discharged him in January 2025, there was nowhere else to send him.

At the same time, Kalombotole was flagged by the DCI as a person of interest in the earlier killing of another patient, Gilbert Kinyua, who was found dead in Ward 7B between February 6 and 7, 2025. His throat had been slit.

Because of that, the DCI advised the hospital to hold him while investigations continued

And only six months later, on July 17, another patient, Edward Maingi Ndegwa, was found dead in the same ward. His throat had also been cut.

The hospital says it had no plans to keep Kalombotole permanently but had no choice due to the lack of alternative housing and the ongoing investigation.

Kalombotole was arrested and is currently in police custody. He is expected to be arraigned soon.

Dr. Sigilai expressed condolences to Edward’s family and confirmed that KNH is cooperating fully with the DCI and other authorities.
