Businessman and car dealer Khalif Kairo has said his biggest regret in recent years was getting involved in Kenyan politics.
Speaking to content creator Andrew Kibe, Kairo said he joined politics hoping to bring change, but quickly became disillusioned.
Kairo believed he could make a difference, especially during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests, where he was seen actively participating in demonstrations in Nairobi. But he soon realized politics was not what he expected.
He described the experience as “so murky,” saying that the political space is full of challenges, especially for newcomers. Kairo warned other entrepreneurs to stay away from politics, especially if their businesses are doing well.
“If you have a business that’s working, stay away from Kenyan politics. Don’t even get close to it,” he said.

He also blamed the voters for the messy system. He said the same people who complain about bad leadership often end up supporting the very leaders causing problems. He explained that fresh voices like his are quickly abandoned and even attacked by those they try to help.
Kairo’s brief political involvement was followed by a series of legal issues involving his car dealership. He was arrested and faced fraud allegations, which he believes were connected to his political activity. He has since been released and is now focusing on rebuilding his business and staying low-key.
Reflecting on his time in custody, Kairo shared that it taught him important life lessons. He was advised by those close to him to keep his personal life private and focus on his growth. Some even told him to avoid women, saying they could be a distraction during difficult times.
