Njugush is now a household name in Kenya’s comedy and digital scene, but few know that in his early days, he often earned food instead of cash for his performances.

Producers would also tell him that the real benefit was the “exposure” he would get on set and on stage. With no other options, he accepted this and kept working.

“Nilikuwa naact nalipwa na chakula na exposure… Unaambiwa hujui nani atakuwa hapo,” he said.

“Later, social media came, and I employed myself.”

When social media became popular, Njugush started creating his own content. This allowed him to control his work and earn money from it. He says consistency, discipline, and effort helped him grow the Njugush brand that is now widely recognized.

Even with success, Njugush says being a creator is challenging. Audiences expect you to always deliver your best.

“You are as good as your last act. If you posted a great video yesterday, people want an even better one today,” he explained.

He advises young creators to find their path, stay consistent, and remain visible, even when their craft isn’t paying yet. He believes that one day, all the effort will pay off.

Njugush also revealed that comedy was not his first choice. He studied journalism and hoped to work in media, but life took him on a different path, which he now enjoys.

His breakthrough came from Hapa Kule News and later The Real Househelps of Kawangware, which made him a household name.
