New details have emerged on the murder of University of Nairobi student, Jane Atila, revealing that her life may have been taken over a Ksh.1,500 ransom balance.
According to police investigations, the main suspect, Nicholas Mutua Mutia, allegedly kidnapped Jane and demanded Ksh.2,500 from her family for her release.
Jane’s brother, Patrick Mwangale, managed to send Ksh.1,000, promising to send the remaining amount later.

Before he could do so, Jane was killed.
“He said he was holding my sister and would only let her go after receiving the full amount. I tried to report it at Kabete Police Station twice, but the officers dismissed my claims,” Patrick said.
Jane’s body was discovered a few days later inside KEFRI forest in Kikuyu, Kiambu County. It was mutilated and decomposing, dashing any hope her family had of finding her alive. Fingerprint analysis confirmed her identity on October 17.

Jane was a second-year student at the University of Nairobi, Kikuyu campus, and had been reported missing on October 3, 2025.
Her family has been left devastated.
As investigations continue, police have arrested Mutua and are also holding two additional suspects linked to the killing.
