When Gengetone musician Kevin Mburu Kinyanjui, aka Shalkido, made an appearance at a Thika nightclub alongside comedian Oga Obinna, little did he know it would be his last. Luckily, he spent it doing what he loved most: performing for his fans.

On the night of Saturday, October 4, Shalkido and Obinna were the main guests at a club event in Thika. The two entertained revelers, laughing, dancing, and sharing light moments with the crowd.

During the night, the DJ played one of Shalkido’s songs, and he grabbed the mic to perform live, to the delight of his fans.

Shalkido, a former Sailors Gang member‘s energy lit up the room, and he spent time interacting and taking photos with supporters afterward.

As the night drew to a close, the two friends prepared to head back to Nairobi.

In the early hours of Sunday, October 5, they both left Thika. Obinna was driving his car, while Shalkido rode his motorbike.

At 4:07 AM, before parting ways, Obinna fueled Shalkido’s motorbike on the outskirts of Thika town.

Shalkido seemed in high spirits. That would turn out to be one of their last interactions.

Shalkido Accident

Barely 30 minutes later, tragedy struck.

While riding along Thika Road, between Githurai and Carwash near Roysambu, Shalkido was involved in a hit-and-run accident.

First responders dispatched at 4:42 AM found him lying severely injured by the roadside with his left leg in an unnatural position.

He was rushed to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), where he was admitted to the ICU.

Doctors revealed that he had severe internal bleeding in the brain, with multiple hemorrhages that made surgery impossible.

His left leg was also broken, but the main concern was the extensive brain damage.

In updates shared publicly, Oga Obinna explained that doctors had pronounced Shalkido brain-dead, meaning he had suffered an irreversible loss of all brain function. Despite being on life support, there was no chance of recovery.

For two days, his family, friends, and fans prayed for a miracle. But on October 7, 2025, Shalkido was officially pronounced dead.

The heartbreaking news was first shared by Obinna, who had been closely monitoring his friend’s condition since the crash. He expressed his grief, recalling their final moments together and how full of life Shalkido had been just hours before the accident.

Ironically, the motorbike that brought Shalkido hope would later take his life. It was the same one well-wishers had bought for him through Eric Omondi’s Sisi kwa Sisi campaign, after he shared his struggles and appealed for support.

Rest in Power Shalkido.
