Collins Kibet Toroitich, the grandson of former President Daniel arap Moi, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for contempt of court.

The court found that he had failed to follow orders requiring him to enrol his two children in school and take care of their basic needs.

The latest ruling came after a long legal battle.

His ex-wife, Gladys Jeruto Tagi, told the court that their children had been out of school because Collins had not paid fees at Mustard Seed International School. She also said the children were emotionally distressed due to the disruptions in their learning.

Her lawyer, Elizabeth Wangari, said they tried to reach an out-of-court agreement with Collins, but it didn’t work. She said the children’s education had continued to suffer while he did nothing to help.

Collins was arrested in Ongata Rongai after avoiding arrest for several months.

In court, his lawyers said he was struggling financially and had no stable income. They also claimed he was involved in ongoing succession disputes over the estates of his late father, Jonathan Moi, and grandfather, the former president.

“Our client is not running from his duties,” his lawyer said. “He simply doesn’t have the money right now, and the demands being made are in the millions.”

But the court ruled that Collins had deliberately ignored its orders. As a result, he was sentenced to serve 30 days in jail.

In 2021, Collins Kibet infamously told the court that he could only afford Ksh. 500 child support. And that he was broke and relied on donations to survive.

This is not the first time Collins Kibet has been in trouble over the same issue.

In September 2024, he was sentenced to seven days in jail for ignoring a child support order. Despite that warning, the court said he still refused to take responsibility.

Eight years ago, Collins Kibet was also accused of stealing two mobile phones.
