Former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has died at the age of 63.
He died on February 21, 2025, at 11 PM while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.
Chebukati had been in the Intensive Care Unit for nearly a week.
However, the cause of his illness has not been made public.

Wafula Chebukati Life and Death
Born on December 22, 1961, in Nanyuki, Chebukati studied law at the University of Nairobi and later earned a Master of Business Administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
He worked as a lawyer for many years and founded the law firm Cootow & Associates Advocates.
In January 2017, he was appointed as IEBC Chairperson by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He led the commission through the 2017 and 2022 General Elections, facing many challenges, including the annulment of the 2017 election by the Supreme Court.
Despite controversy, he completed his six-year term and retired in January 2023.
Outside his work, Chebukati was passionate about golf and was a member of several golf clubs in Kenya. He is survived by his wife, Mary Chebukati Wanyonyi, and their children.
Leaders and citizens have begun paying tribute, remembering his role in Kenya’s elections. His family will announce funeral plans soon.
