Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Kipkoech Lagat has “stepped aside” to allow investigations into the death of blogger Albert Ojwang to continue without interference.

This does not mean he has resigned but that He is temporarily leaving his position so that investigations can proceed without interference or conflict of interest.

Ojwang died while being held at Central Police Station in Nairobi. His arrest came shortly after he posted on social media, accusing Lagat of corruption and misuse of power. The post went viral and sparked public anger.

In a statement on Monday, Lagat said he made the decision in good faith and would support the investigation fully.

“I have today chosen to step aside from my role until the investigations are over,” he said. “I also send my condolences to the family of Albert Ojwang.”

His resignation comes after protests across the country and strong calls for action from the public. Many Kenyans, especially young people, took to the streets to demand justice for Ojwang.
