A Catholic nun, Sister Caroline Kanjiru, has been detained for 14 days after allegedly killing another nun, Sister Anselmina Karimi, in Meru County.
The incident happened at a children’s centre in the Nkambune area of Imenti East. Sister Karimi, 65, was the head of the Meru Children’s Centre before her death.
Her body was found at her home on Sunday, October 12, 2025. She had bruises on her arms and legs.
Police said she was lying on her back and had been hit with a blunt object. Officers visited the scene and took her body to the mortuary for a postmortem.
Sister Kanjiru had recently been transferred to the centre and was expected to take over its leadership. She was arrested after the incident was reported at Nkubu Police Station.
Although Sister Kanjiru told investigators that Sister Karimi died on the way to Nkubu Hospital, they suspect foul play.
The court ordered that Sister Kanjiru be held at the Meru Police Station for 14 days.
The Judge noted that keeping the nun in custody would protect her from public anger and help investigators finish their work.
After investigations, she will either be charged or released depending on the findings.
