Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at his home in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County. His family, close friends, and national leaders, including President William Ruto, attended the state funeral.
Raila was buried with two special items, his famous hat and a traditional fly whisk.
Why was Raila Odinga Buried with these Items?

The hat, known as “Ogudu” in Luo, was part of Raila’s signature look. It represented his personality, confidence, and long journey as a leader.
The fly whisk, called “Orengo” in Luo, has a deep cultural meaning. It is often carried by elders and leaders as a sign of authority and wisdom. Burying him with it symbolized respect and showed that his leadership and dignity live on, even after death.
The military also presented the Kenyan flag that was draped on his coffin to Mama Ida Odinga in honour of his service to the nation.
As his casket was lowered, the ceremony became private, with only family, dignitaries, and close allies allowed to place flowers on his grave.
Raila’s son, Raila Odinga Junior, was seen carrying his father’s whisk earlier in the week, a gesture many saw as a symbol of his father’s lasting legacy.

It was a fitting farewell for a man whose life, leadership, and spirit will always be remembered.
