Men who suffer from erectile dysfunction may now smile in hope. Because medics at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi have successfully performed a penile implant procedure to treat erectile dysfunction in a young man.

Dr. Ahmed Yousef, a consultant urologist and who was the lead surgeon in the case, explained that the entire procedure took about an hour and involved implanting a prosthesis device in the penis.

The advantage of this surgery is that the man can have sex with a woman whenever he wants as long as he wants in any style he wants wherever he wants. And the success rate is 95-97 per cent,” Dr Yousef said.

He added that the patient is in his 40s and has been suffering from erectile dysfunction for many years. Even though erectile dysfunction or impotence is prevalent in Kenya, it is still considered a taboo subject among many men.

Dr. Yousuf also said that the patient was put on other treatment modalities but was not responsive. And that the tests conducted on the patient showed his erectile dysfunction was caused by severe venous leakage.

Venous leakage

The term venous leakage refers to veins in the penis. Blood vessels are important for erections. So when a man becomes sexually aroused, the arteries in his penis expand to allow blow to flow in, making the erection firm.

However, to keep the erection rigid, blood needs to stay in the penis until the man ejaculates. To accomplish this, veins constrict to trap the blood inside. (This process is called veno-occlusion.) Once the man climaxes, or if sexual stimulation ends, the veins widen and blood flows back into the body.

If the veins do not constrict enough, blood will “leak” back into the body, softening the erection. Many men with this type of ED find that they can get a firm erection at first But gradually lose the firmness.

Venous leak is often a cause of ED in younger men.

Surgery

Penile implants are the closest thing there is to a cure for men with this problem.

Through this procedure, his erectile dysfunction condition has been treated. If he had issues with premature ejaculation, it would also be treated by this procedure,” Dr Yousef said.

The procedure involves placing two cylinders into the male organ along with a fluid-filled container in the abdomen and an inflatable pump in the scrotum. To achieve an erection, you pump the fluid, which is salt water, from the reservoir into the cylinders. Afterward, you release the valve inside the scrotum to drain the fluid back into the reservoir. Erection lasts about 15 minutes.

Yousuf bragged that this was the first time for this procedure to be conducted in the East and Central Africa region. Because it requires a rare specialized expertise, a sub-specialty in urology,

Please note

While penile implants allow men to get an erection, they don’t increase sexual desire or sensation. Penile implants also won’t make your penis any larger than it is at the time of surgery. In fact, with an implant, your erect penis might seem slightly shorter than it used to be.
