The DCI has arrested six more suspects linked to the shocking Meru gang rape in Laare, Igembe North, Meru County.

The attack, which was filmed and shared online, sparked widespread outrage across the country. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko even offered a Ksh300,000 reward for information that would help identify the attackers.

How did the Meru Gang Rape Occur?

Six suspects in the Meru gang rape case arrested.

The assault reportedly happened during a chaotic traditional circumcision procession involving nearly 100 men.

Police received a distress call and rushed to the scene. They found the woman in severe distress. Her clothes were torn, and she was emotionally traumatized. Officers took her to Nyambene Hospital for treatment and counselling.

Detectives believe that more than 10 men raped her in turns and recorded the attack on their phones. Some of the videos later circulated online, causing national anger and renewed calls for action against gender-based violence.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, December 3, officers from Laare Police Station in Meru carried out targeted operations in Irinde, Lubwa, and Kiarama. The officers arrested six men believed to have taken part in the assault.

These arrests bring the total number of suspects to nine. Three others had been arrested earlier on December 1, the same day the attack happened. All nine are being processed and will be arraigned in court.

DCI says the arrests followed a detailed manhunt using forensic clues and coordinated searches across several villages. More suspects are still being pursued.

“As investigations continue, detectives remain focused on identifying and arresting every person involved,” the DCI said.

The case has revived debate on the safety of women and the growing cases of violence in public spaces.

Mike Sonko reacted strongly to the incident. He condemned the attackers and announced a campaign demanding justice for the survivor. He also offered a cash reward to anyone who could help police find the suspects.

“What happened is pure evil,” he said. He added that his private rescue and security team had been deployed to support the search.

He also urged investigators and women’s rights groups to push for quick justice.

The survivor is still hospitalized and receiving medical care.
