Winnie Odinga, the lastborn daughter of Raila Odinga has shared a glimpse into her father’s final moments, revealing he took his last breath in her arms.

“He died in my arms,” Winnie told thousands of mourners at Nyayo Stadium.

“But he did not die like people have been saying on social media.”

Winnie was with her father in India, where he was receiving treatment.

She recalled how disciplined he was even in his final days. And how he maintained his daily morning walks at the Ayurvedic facility where he was staying.

But perhaps on the fateful day, he took a walk too many and overexerted.

“Dad would wake up every morning and take a walk,” she said.

“On the first day, he did one round, then the next day, two rounds. That morning, he pushed to five rounds. He died strong, with dignity, and with pride, and you must all be proud of that.”

Raila Odinga complained he was tired and sat down. This is when he collapsed and was declared dead when rushed to the hospital.

Winnie spoke passionately about Raila’s love for his family, especially his grandchildren. She said he always made time for them, even in the busiest moments of his political life.

“Dad loved his grandchildren. He loved them with all his heart,” she said.

“Even when duty called, he would send me to check on them. He wanted us to stay grounded, to dream boldly, and to always stand firm for what is right.”

She described Raila not only as a national leader but as a father she “loved with every fibre of my being.”

The biggest part of me died on October 15, 2025, but the spirit of the lion roars on forever.”

Her tribute drew tears from many mourners as she thanked Kenyans from all walks of life for standing with the family.

“You all must walk with your heads held high and be proud that he left as a gentleman The king is dead, but long live the crown.” she said.

Raila Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister and one of the country’s most iconic political figures, passed away in India on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80.
