George Ruto’s controversial matatu, Money Fest, has once again made headlines after being involved in an accident with a boda boda rider.

The crash happened along Outering Road, just before the Mutindwa footbridge. A video circulating online shows the matatu stationary in the middle of the road, with a motorbike lying in front of it. A small crowd had gathered around the scene, and passengers were seen alighting from the vehicle. Another car was filmed maneuvering around the stationary matatu.

It is still unclear what exactly led to the collision. Some social media users blamed the boda boda rider, while others pointed fingers at the matatu crew. The debate quickly became heated, with people sharing different opinions online.

Money Fest has been one of Nairobi’s most talked-about Public Service Vehicles since it hit the roads in mid-2024. It is a flashy, custom Isuzu matatu with a dominant yellow color, airbrushed dollar-themed artwork, 55-inch side screens, six Pioneer subwoofers, special lighting, and luxury interior modifications designed for passenger comfort and entertainment.

It first operated on the Ngong Road route, where it faced criticism for alleged unfair competition against smaller operators. Soon after, allegations surfaced that it was operating without a Sacco, flouting traffic rules, and had not undergone NTSA inspection.

After public pressure, the vehicle was inspected and returned to service. However, in January 2025, it was filmed in Ongata Rongai overtaking dangerously while racing another matatu. Two passengers were even seen sitting on its roof. The NTSA later impounded the vehicle, and its driver, Dominic “Kinara” Amaya, was fined KSh 50,000 after pleading guilty to traffic offenses.

Following these incidents, Money Fest shifted routes to Embakasi, but its notoriety followed. The latest accident has only added to its controversial reputation.

For now, the exact cause of the collision remains unknown, and authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
