The family of Simon Thumbi Kihanya, alias Ruigi, 44, is still seeking justice after he mysteriously died in a cell at Turasha Police Post in Kipipiri, Nyandarua County.

The deceased was arrested on the morning of Monday, June 23, 2025, for allegedly obstructing police officers while appearing drunk.

Police say he was booked into custody at 10:30 a.m. and later found dead less than two hours later, during a routine check at 12:46 p.m.

According to the report, Thumbi allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself using his shirt, which was tied to the padlock of the inner cell door.

Officers say they discovered his body in the cell, with the knees reportedly touching the ground.

The deceased’s family has rejected the police version of events, saying the body position raises suspicion.

“It doesn’t make sense. The place they are describing is barely a foot high. They claim he tied his shirt to a padlock and hanged himself, which is impossible,” said Simon Irungu, a relative.

“We don’t even know who arrested him. We just heard he was picked up on his way to a shopping center,” he added.

Local leaders have also stepped in, demanding an independent investigation into the incident.

As the investigation continues, Thumbi’s family and the wider community are still demanding answers, accountability, and justice. They believe there is more to the story than what has been reported, and they will not rest until the truth is revealed.
