Venice Mokaya, a 19-year-old girl, tragically died in Diani just days after attending the popular SummerTides Festival.

Venice had travelled to the coast to enjoy the beachside music event, which took place on July 4 and 5, 2025, at Jacaranda Indian Ocean Beach Resort. She shared happy moments with friends and even watched a peaceful sunrise at the beach after the event.

But just two days later, on Monday, July 7, tragedy struck. Venice suffered an electric shock from a live wire at an Airbnb she was staying in. She was rushed to hospital, but sadly, she did not survive. Her sudden death shocked many and triggered an outpouring of grief across social media.

And especially since she had recently celebrated her 19th birthday, on which she made what would be her last ever post on social media. She wore a white dress and held a money bouquet in the picture.

And she captioned, “Trusting God is the greatest weapon.”

Venice Mokaya: her final ever social media post.

What Killed Venice Mokaya?

Rumors quickly spread, claiming she had died at the SummerTides venue itself. However, her friends were quick to clarify that she passed away after the event and not at the festival location. This is reportedly on the night the government banned young people from traveling back to Nairobi so they would not tak part in the deadly Saba Saba protests.

The official SummerTides organizers have not yet issued a public statement.

On Friday, July 11, her friends held a candle-lit vigil at her family’s home in Ongata Rongai. They shared memories, lit candles, and celebrated her life.

Venice had just turned 19 in February. She was known for posting joyful videos, beach trips, and outings with friends. She also shared sweet family moments, including Christmas photos with her parents and siblings.

Her death has left many heartbroken. Tributes flooded her social media pages, with messages like “Rest in peace, gorgeous girl” and “Heaven gained an angel.”

Venice Mokaya lived fully and joyfully. Her life was short, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
