Abdullahi Yussuf Sheikh Nur, a former UDA parliamentary aspirant, has been arrested in the United States over allegations of attempting to solicit sex from someone he believed was a 17-year-old girl.

Nur, 46, who unsuccessfully vied for the Wajir South parliamentary seat in the 2022 elections, was arrested in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, during a human trafficking sting operation.

How Nur was Caught in the Act

Authorities say the operation was launched after Nur responded to an online advertisement that was part of a police setup.

The ad was posted by an undercover officer posing as a teenage girl. In their communication, Nur was told that the girl was 17 years old. Despite this, he continued chatting and eventually arranged a meeting in person.

He agreed to meet at a golf course in Eden Prairie, where he was arrested by officers waiting for him.

At the time of arrest, he had $250 in cash. The Police believe Nur intended to use this money to pay for the sexual encounter, He was also arrested with his mobile phone, which contained the chat records.

Court documents reveal that Nur initiated the conversation, solicited sex, and confirmed he was aware of the girl’s supposed age.

He was among twelve men taken into custody in the operation, which targeted child predators and traffickers.

His arrest has been confirmed as part of a wider effort by the Eden Prairie Police Department to combat trafficking and child exploitation along the Interstate 494 corridor.

Since 2016, Eden Prairie police have conducted 38 similar operations. These stings have led to over 400 arrests and helped at least 117 trafficking victims find support and assistance.

The arrest of a political figure in such a case raises alarm and calls for greater awareness around the issue of online exploitation. And especially when the said politician once vied for public office.

Let this case serve as a wake-up call. The safety of children must never be compromised.
