A determined group of Gen Z protesters today marching along Thika Road toward Nairobi’s CBD, has overpowered police roadblocks.
The protesters began their journey from as far as Thika town, with numbers swelling steadily as more people joined from Githurai, Njiru, Kasarani, and surrounding areas.
By the time they reached the city limits, the peaceful crowd had grown significantly. They are waving Kenyan flags, chanting ‘Ruto Must Go’ and “Wantam.
Police had initially blocked the march at key points including at Githurai 45 and again at Roasters.
However, the protesters, who at one time resorted to playing football on the highway, regrouped and pushed back the officers all the way to Alsops, forcing a retreat.
The police fired tear gas repeatedly, filling the air with white smoke, but the demonstrators remained calm and continued moving.
On-ground reports showed that many of the protesters came prepared for the long march.
Most are wearing national colors and only carrying flags and placards. There have been no incidents of looting or property damage reported in the area.
This is thanks in part to the exposé of Government-sponsored goons, which thwarted said goons’ plans to infiltrate the June 25 protests.
The crowd’s main goal is to join fellow demonstrators already gathered in the city center as part of the national June 25 anniversary protests. Today marks one year since more than 60 young Kenyans were killed during protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
