JANET WANJA: FORMER MALKIA STRIKER DIES FROM CANCER

The Kenyan sports community is mourning the loss of volleyball legend Janet Wanja, 0, who passed away on Thursday, December 26, after briefly battling gallbladder cancer.

Her family confirmed the sad news in a heartfelt statement, and expressed gratitude to Kenya Pipeline for fully covering her medical expenses during her treatment.

“The family of Janet Wanja would like to announce her passing after a brave battle with cancer,” the statement read.

Wanja enjoyed a stellar volleyball career that spanned close to 15 years. She played for Kenya Pipeline from 2005 until she retired in 2019.

Wanja is among one of the most celebrated players in the history of Kenyan volleyball. known for her skill and leadership.

Her international career began in 2004 when she represented Kenya at the Athens Olympics. In 2015, she played a pivotal role in leading the Malkia Strikers to their seventh Women’s African Volleyball Championship title on home soil, where she was named “Best Setter.”

After retiring, Wanja transitioned into coaching, becoming the Malkia Strikers’ fitness trainer.

Earlier this year, she accompanied the team to the Paris Olympics in August.

She fell ill shortly after returning and was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer.

Her passing has left a deep void in the sporting world.
