RUTH KAMANDE: THE STORY OF A MURDER CONVICT NOW A LAW GRADUATE

Ruth Kamande’s life took a dramatic turn in 2018, when she was convicted of the brutal murder of her boyfriend, Farid Mohamed Halim. The 21-year-old was found guilty of stabbing him 25 times during a heated argument, and she was sentenced to death, and her future seemed lost.

Before her arrest, Kamande was studying Business at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

However, her future changed in an instant when a confrontation with Farid over his HIV status and alleged infidelities escalated into violence. Kamande claimed the situation spiraled out of control when Farid allegedly threatened her, leading her to stab him in a moment of intense fear and anger.

The conviction was harsh, but Kamande was determined to move beyond the mistakes of her past.

During her time in Kamiti Maximum Prison, Kamandeenrolled in a law program offered by the University of London, with support from the Justice Defenders, an organization that helps inmates access education.

At first, the challenge seemed insurmountable. Kamande openly admitted to feeling overwhelmed by the size of the textbooks and the emotional weight of her circumstances.

“There was a time I almost gave up,” she confesses.

“But the prison officers supported me. They encouraged me, talked to me, and ensured I stayed focused.”

This encouragement and her commitment to education ultimately paid off. Kamande was among 17 inmates who graduated with a law degree from the University of London, all while serving their sentences in Kamiti Prison.

Who motivated her?

“I wanted to be like Githu Muigai,” Kamande says, referring to the renowned Kenyan lawyer who had once assisted her with her case. “He helped me, and I want to help others just like he helped me.”

While Kamande’s legal case remains a part of her past, her future is now open to possibilities.

Although her conviction was upheld by the Court of Appeal in 2020, confirming her actions were deliberate, she has found redemption through her studies.

Her story serves as an inspiring example of resilience, proving that it’s never too late to change the trajectory of one’s life.
