Former Sol Generation artist Bensoul recently opened up about a tough time in his life that changed him forever.
In a YouTube interview with Philip Karanja, Bensoul, a father of one, shared how battling tuberculosis (TB) affected his relationships and music career.
While dealing with TB, Bensoul’s health took a serious hit. He lost a lot of weight, which led his girlfriend and her family to worry.
They thought he might have AIDS because he looked so frail.
Eventually, this concern pushed his girlfriend to end their relationship.
“It was painful,” Bensoul recalls, “especially when I needed support the most.”

How did Bensoul Cope?
Feeling heartbroken and isolated, Bensoul returned to his family home to focus on getting better. This decision turned out to be a key moment in his life.
“I lost my voice and couldn’t sing,” he said.
With music off the table, he turned to songwriting. “I started writing songs instead, which helped me cope with everything I was feeling.”
Being away from distractions allowed Bensoul to dig deep into his creativity.
“I would imagine the music and write it down. It felt like a fresh start,” he explained. This new way of creating music opened doors for him. “I found that I liked to write in quiet places, soaking in the world around me and finding inspiration from everyday life,” he added.
Bensoul’s unique approach has led to some of his best work, even if it confuses some people in the music industry.
“When I tell other artists about it, they often don’t get it. But for me, it’s all about seeing the music in my head,” he said.
