Kenya’s President William Ruto has made history by appointing the first female commander of the Air Force.

Maj Gen Fatuma GAhmed breaks barriers as the first woman to lead one of Kenya’s military services.

Her appointment comes as part of a broader reshuffle following the tragic helicopter crash last month, which claimed the lives of the military chief and others.

Gen Charles Kahariri has been promoted to fill the vacant position in the wake of the accident.

Maj Gen Ahmed’s journey in the military has been marked by notable achievements, challenging the male-dominated leadership. She previously became the first woman to attain the ranks of brigadier and major general.

Joining the military in 1983, Maj Gen Ahmed initially served in the Women Service Corps, an exclusive unit focusing on support duties like administration, logistics, medical, and communication.

The disbandment of the Women Service Corps in 1999 opened doors for its members to integrate into the main military services, facilitating opportunities for women like Maj Gen Ahmed to advance through the ranks.

Her rise signifies a significant stride towards gender equality in the armed forces.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, during her promotion to major general in 2018, emphasized her role as a beacon for women, urging her to defy limitations and serve as a positive role model.

Maj Gen Ahmed’s inspiration to join the military stemmed from her uncle’s influence, whose dedication and discipline left a profound impact on her life from an early age.

Despite facing skepticism from some family members about women’s suitability for military roles, Maj Gen Ahmed remained resolute in her determination to make a difference.

Her appointment as the first female air force commander underscores the ongoing progress towards inclusivity and diversity in Kenya’s armed forces.
