Village elders from Gitei village in Kiambu County, convened at the home of the late Brian Chira in Githunguri for a cleansing ritual on Friday April 26.

This gathering was prompted by the troubling behavior witnessed during Chira’s burial ceremony the previous month.

Expressing dismay over the misconduct, one villager remarked, “We did not like the way they dressed, smoked, and drank alcohol in front of us. They did not even respect the clergy. They were disrespecting our Kikuyu traditions, and we’ve never seen that before.”

The elders were particularly concerned about the disregard for tradition, with mourners drinking alcohol and smoking openly in the presence of clergy and elders, actions they deemed unacceptable.

“We are worried about their future and how they’re going to raise their own children,” expressed another villager.

During the cleansing ceremony, which began with prayers seeking forgiveness for the disruptions during Brian Chira’s funeral, the elders donned Agikuyu traditional regalia befitting their esteemed status in the community.

They performed rituals aimed at dispelling any lingering negative energies or spirits that may have been left behind by the tumultuous events of the funeral.
