The Meteorological Department warns Nairobi residents to brace for heavy rainfall exceeding 40mm in 24 hours starting Thursday.
In their forecast on Thursday afternoon, the weatherman stated that the rain will persist across various regions, including the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, Southeast Lowlands, Coast, and northern sector.
“The intensity is predicted to escalate, surpassing 50mm in 24 hours,” the department advised, urging Kenyans to stay weather-aware and prepared.
The heavy rains are expected to continue from Friday, April 26, through to Saturday, April 27, with a reduction in intensity likely by April 28. Gusty winds, large ocean waves, and strong southerly winds are also anticipated in the eastern sector.
Specific areas in Nairobi, such as Westlands, Lang’ata, Kibra, Roysambu, Dagoreti South, and Embakasi East and South, are expected to receive rainfall exceeding 100mm.
Neighboring Kiambu is also on alert for heavy rains, particularly in Kiambaa, Kabete, Limuru, Githunguri, Thika town, Ruiru, Juja, and Gatundu North and South.
In Machakos, areas like Matungulu, Mavoko, and Kangundo are likely to experience the rains, with intensity varying between 20 to 50mm. Residents of Kajiado have also been advised to stay weather-aware.
The forecast warns of possible flash floods in many areas, including those not directly experiencing rainfall due to saturated ground from previous heavy rains.
Nairobi County Government provided an update, stating that at least 60,000 people were affected by floods exacerbated by Ngong River and Mau Mau River breaking their banks. Governor Johnson Sakaja confirmed four deaths and six missing persons.
Safety guidelines issued by the Kenya National Highways Authority and the Kenya Red Cross emphasize caution for motorists and pedestrians, urging reduced speeds, safe distancing, and avoidance of flooded areas to prevent accidents and loss of lives.
