The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced the partial closure of several roads in Nairobi due to ongoing floods. Thika Road and UN Avenue in Runda are among the major roads affected.
According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, over 30 people have died as a result of the floods since te rain started in mid-March.
KURA issued warnings to motorists to avoid flooded roads for their safety as efforts are made to restore normalcy. The closure comes after heavy rains on the night of Tuesday, April 23.
“Following the heavy rains experienced last night across the country, the following roads within Nairobi County have been heavily affected, leading to partial closure,” stated KURA.

Motorists are cautioned about flooding along key routes like Mombasa Road at Cabanas and Thika Road at Githurai/Kahawa bridge. The agency assured that traffic police and technical teams are on-site to manage traffic and ensure safety.
The affected roads include Thika Road at Githurai/Kahawa bridge, Kasarani-Mwiki Road at Mwiki bridge, Aerodrome Road, Kapenguria Road, UN Avenue – Runda, and Mombasa Road at Cabanas.
KURA emphasized that their teams, alongside the police, are actively working to address the challenges caused by the heavy rains. They promised to provide updates as the situation unfolds.
